Motor Vehicle Accident and PIP Billing for Pain Management

Motor vehicle accident (MVA) and personal injury protection (PIP) claims follow different rules from health insurance: separate coverage limits, precertification, state fee schedules, and attorney involvement. DOCS4DOCS bills accident claims for pain management practices, including New Jersey PIP, and tracks every case until the treatment is paid.

How are MVA and PIP claims billed?

What does MVA and PIP billing involve?

Accident billing starts at intake, when we record the auto carrier, claim number, adjuster and policy limits. From there we verify remaining PIP benefits, request precertification, bill to the state fee schedule, switch to secondary coverage when PIP runs out, and work with the patient's attorney through settlement.

  • Identifying the auto carrier, claim number, adjuster and policy limits at intake
  • Verifying remaining PIP benefits and whether health insurance is primary
  • Requesting precertification or Decision Point Review before procedures
  • Billing to the applicable state fee schedule
  • Switching to secondary coverage when PIP benefits are exhausted
  • Coordinating records and billing statements with the patient's attorney
  • Tracking letter of protection and lien cases through settlement

How does New Jersey PIP billing work?

New Jersey is a no-fault state, so auto injury treatment is billed first to the patient's own PIP coverage. NJ carriers use Decision Point Review Plans, pay according to the state's medical fee schedule, and require internal appeals before a dispute can go to PIP arbitration. We handle each of those steps for New Jersey practices.

Why do accident claims go unpaid?

Accident claims are often slow to pay and easy to forget. Treatment may happen months before a case settles, the patient's benefits may run out mid-treatment, and the responsible payer can change. Without active tracking, practices end up writing off care they already provided. We keep every accident case on a follow-up schedule until it is paid.

FAQ

MVA and PIP Billing questions

What is PIP billing?

PIP billing is billing an auto insurer's personal injury protection coverage for medical treatment after a car accident. In no-fault states such as New Jersey, PIP pays first regardless of who caused the accident, up to the policy's limit.

What happens when a patient's PIP benefits run out?

Once PIP benefits are exhausted, the remaining treatment is billed to the patient's health insurance or handled through the patient's attorney, depending on the case. We watch remaining benefits so the switch happens without gaps in payment.

Do you work with personal injury attorneys?

Yes. We coordinate billing statements and records with the patient's attorney and track letter of protection and lien cases through settlement.
